Ken Garland

Ken Garland (1929–2021) was a British graphic designer, photographer, writer and educator whose work explored the relationship between visual communication, culture and everyday life. Known for his graphic design studio Ken Garland & Associates, he developed a distinctive approach based on clarity, experimentation and social engagement. He is also recognised for redesigning the symbol of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), which became one of the world’s most widely recognised symbols of peace.

Throughout his career, Garland taught at leading institutions including the Central School of Art and Design, the Royal College of Art and the University of Reading, while also writing extensively about design. His work ranged from editorial and identity projects to publications, educational materials and playful objects.

For Architoys, three of Ken Garland’s original game designs — Anymals, Connect and Fizzog — are produced under licence. After almost half a century, these games remain engaging, with exceptional graphic quality and a remarkable sense of artistic modernity, reflecting Garland’s enduring approach to playful design.
