Puzzle Torino

This 1899 view of the city of Turin offers a spectacle of harmony between nature and architecture, magnificently captured in a Photocrom print produced by the Detroit Publishing Co., an American publishing house that created thousands of views of cities, landscapes, and monuments from around the world. Its aim was to provide the American public with realistic and evocative images of Europe’s most beautiful places.

The Photocrom was a photolithographic printing technique that made it possible to obtain color images starting from a black-and-white photograph. By using multiple lithographic plates—Bach dedicated to a specific hue—it was possible to create views of remarkable realism and chromatic intensity.

In this image, the city of Turin stretches out at the foot of the hill, while in the background rise the Alps, majestic and luminous. The Mole Antonelliana stands prominently at the center as a symbol of identity and modernity, a witness to an era of great transformation. The delicate, nuanced colors typical of the Photocrom lend the whole composition a suspended, poetic atmosphere. This view is more than just an urban panorama: it is a portrait of its time, uniting technique, art, and memory, and conveying all the beauty and elegance of Turin.
