Puzzle Il Bucintoro
Il Bucintoro al molo nel giorno dell’Ascensione is one of the most celebrated paintings by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, the undisputed master of eighteenth-century Venetian views. The work, dated 1730, depicts with extraordinary precision and brightness the traditional ceremony of the Marriage of the Sea, which took place every year on Ascension Day. On this occasion, the Doge of Venice boarded the Bucentaur, the sumptuous gilded state barge, to perform the symbolic rite that affirmed the Serenissima’s dominion over the Adriatic Sea.
Canaletto masterfully captures the festive and splendid atmosphere of the day: the Molo of St. Mark’s is crowded with nobles, merchants, ambassadors, and citizens, while in the background stand the Doge’s Palace, the Marciana Library, and the Punta della Dogana. The clear, vibrant light enhances the reflections on the water and the architectural details, giving the painting a sense of balance and harmony.
With his rigorous perspective and his ability to bring urban life to the canvas, Canaletto transforms the scene into a celebration of the power and beauty of Venice—the eternal queen of the sea.
