Explore Florence as it appeared in 1850 through this beautifully detailed Topographical Plan of Florence, designed by Gaetano Auzzani, engraved by Giacinto Maina and edited by Giovanni Berni. The map offers a fascinating portrait of the city, combining its historic architecture, neighbourhoods and urban structure in remarkable detail.

A tribute to Vincenzo Peruzzi, the last gonfalonier of Florence, the plan provides an unusually rich record of the city’s buildings. An extensive list identifies them by location, name, construction status, architect and period, while also documenting the three circles of city walls built from 775 onwards.

The map uses a distinctive colour-coded system to distinguish religious buildings, public buildings, private buildings and other significant structures. Brown lines divide the city into its historic terzieri, the three administrative districts of the time.
