Patrick Rylands

Patrick Rylands (1943) is an English designer renowned for his innovative approach to children’s toys. After graduating in ceramics from the Royal College of Art in London in 1966, he began working as a freelance designer for internationally recognised toy companies, including Creative Playthings, Naef and Ambi Toys.

In 1970, Rylands became the youngest recipient of the prestigious Prince Philip Designers Prize for a series of ABS plastic toys created for Trendon Toys. Later, as in-house designer at Ambi Toys from 1976 to 2002, he developed a distinctive collection of playful and functional designs that combined creativity, simplicity and lasting appeal. In 1999, he was appointed Royal Designer for Industry. His work is represented in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum of Childhood in London.

For Architoys, Joupii is produced in Italy as an exclusive edition, bringing Patrick Rylands’ charming wooden character design to a new generation while reflecting his enduring belief in thoughtful and imaginative play.
