Fredun Shapur

Fredun Shapur (1929–2021) was a pioneering toy designer and illustrator whose work helped redefine the role of design in children’s play. Born in Johannesburg and based in London, his visual language was shaped by bold colours, geometric forms and a refined sense of simplicity. Inspired by modernist principles, his designs encouraged imagination and exploration through open-ended play.

From the 1960s to the 1980s, Shapur created innovative toys for international manufacturers such as Naef, Galt Toys and Creative Playthings. His creations, ranging from wooden puzzles to imaginative play objects, combined graphic clarity with playful learning opportunities, appealing to both children and adults.

Architoys presents a selection of Fredun Shapur’s timeless designs, including the Multi-View series, first created in 1964 and recognised for encouraging collaborative play from every angle. These timeless creations reflect his belief that thoughtful design can transform simple forms into meaningful experiences of curiosity and discovery.
