Explore Milan as it appeared in 1870 through this detailed historic map, entitled Milan as it is nowadays. Published in 1870, the map was sold at the shop of cartographer Luigi Ronchi, located at number 4 in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II.
Divided into districts identified by different colours, the map provides a fascinating portrait of the city. A complete list of streets appears on the left, while the right side identifies the main establishments and their locations, including administrative buildings, archives, libraries, emporiums, schools and colleges, theatres and barracks. A short text also explains the functioning of the city gates and their relationship with the payment of duties.
