Discover Turin at the turn of the 20th century

This 1899 view of Turin captures the city at a time of great transformation, with the Mole Antonelliana rising prominently above the urban landscape and the majestic Alps stretching across the background. Reproduced as a 540-piece puzzle, the image offers a glimpse into the architecture, landscape and atmosphere of Turin at the turn of the 20th century.

The view was produced as a Photocrom print by the Detroit Publishing Co., an American publishing house known for creating thousands of views of cities, landscapes and monuments around the world. Its aim was to bring realistic and evocative images of Europe’s most remarkable places to the American public.

Photocrom was a photolithographic printing technique that made it possible to create colour images from black-and-white photographs. By using multiple lithographic plates, each dedicated to a specific hue, the process produced images with remarkable realism and rich, nuanced colours.

In this composition, Turin stretches out at the foot of the hills, while the Alps rise majestically in the distance. The Mole Antonelliana, already a defining symbol of the city, stands at the centre of the scene. The delicate colours and atmospheric quality of the Photocrom process give the image a timeless, almost poetic character.

This historic Turin puzzle brings together architecture, landscape and photographic art, offering a unique way to discover the elegance of the Italian city as it appeared more than a century ago.
