Puzzle Piazza dei Miracoli
This colored engraving is the result of the collaboration between two talented artists of the 19th century: William Henry Bartlett, who created the original drawing, andRobert Sands, who was the engraver responsible for transferring the work onto the printing plate.
William Henry Bartlett (1809-1854) was a well-known British artist and traveller, known for his detailed topographical landscapes. He travelled widely in Europe, the Middle East, and North America, producing numerous sketches that were later transformed into engravings for illustrated travel books, very popular at the time.
Robert Sands was one of the master engravers who worked with Bartlett's drawings. In the 19th century it was common for different artists to collaborate: a draughtsman created the initial image and a specialist engraver sculpted the final image onto a steel or copper plate for mass printing. The work was published in Italy by Luigi Bardi, in 1842, as part of a collection of Italian views.
The engraving shows not only the grandeur of the Piazza dei Miracoli, but also the lifestyle and fashion of the Victorian era through the figures in the foreground which help to understand the scale of the monuments
